Rail Baltica

Rail Baltica is a flagship infrastructure project that will connect the Baltic States with the European high-speed rail network. Kaunas is a key hub in this corridor, boosting both freight competitiveness and workforce mobility.

(Railroads)

Kaunas is the key Rail Baltica junction, featuring an operational European standard gauge and the intersection of the 1520 mm and 1435 mm rail systems on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea.

  • This is the first European-gauge (1435 mm) rail segment in Lithuania, reaching Kaunas since 2021.
  • The line allows freight trains to operate at speeds of up to 120 km/h.
  • Trains run on the Kaunas–Warsaw route.
  • 249 km/h – for passenger trains
  • Operational network: 2031
  • Connections: (Kaunas–Panevėžys; Kaunas–Riga; Kaunas–Tallinn; Kaunas–Warsaw (future); Kaunas–Vilnius)

Railways (01)

Railways

LTG Link continues to strengthen the Kaunas–Vilnius route — in 2024 it carried 1.9 million passengers, and new international connections (Vilnius–Warsaw, and in the future Kaunas–Riga–Tallinn via Rail Baltica) will further expand transport options. The projected 1 hour 35 min travel time to Riga will fundamentally reshape regional logistics and freight flow management.

Road infrastructure (02)

Road infrastructure

The “Via Lietuva” project — a four-lane highway from the Lithuania–Latvia border to Kaunas via Panevėžys — will reinforce Kaunas’ position as a logistics hub. This new artery will connect the Baltic States and strengthen Kaunas’ role as a key road and rail transport node. Existing highways to Klaipėda, Vilnius, and the Polish border already provide an excellent transport network — the new northern route will further increase workforce mobility and improve access to freight flows.

Air connectivity (03)

Air connectivity

Kaunas International Airport served 18% more passengers in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period last year. As passenger and cargo volumes grow, the airport is becoming an increasingly important link between the Kaunas region and European cities. This dynamic directly increases logistics companies’ interest in the nearby business territories.

International River Port

(Port)

Rivers are the most cost-efficient and eco-friendly cargo transport alternative.
Located near the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers, the International Kaunas River Port enables cargo shipments connecting Kaunas with the Port of Klaipėda.

  • 120 m quay with a docking area, situated next to the Nemunas–Neris confluence
  • Kaunas–Klaipėda cargo trip duration: ~1 day
  • Average barge capacity: equivalent to 40 trucks
  • A 4-lane access road connects the port to the main highways: Via Baltica (Kaunas–Riga–Tallinn) and A1 (Klaipėda–Kaunas–Vilnius–Minsk)

Kaunas Free Economic Zone (FEZ)

(Kaunas FEZ)

Kaunas Free Economic Zone (FEZ) is one of the largest and most successful in Lithuania, covering 534 hectares in a strategic location between Kaunas Airport and the A1 (Vilnius–Klaipėda) and A6 (Kaunas–Marijampolė–Suwałki) highways. More than 50 companies operate in the zone, including international names such as Continental Automotive Lithuania, Hella, Hollister, FL Technics Engine Services, and Birštonas Mineral Water Company.

The Kaunas FEZ offers a 15-year corporate tax exemption and a 50% tax reduction for the following 10 years, as well as ready-to-use infrastructure (“plug & play” plots with utility networks, road and rail access). Its proximity to the airport and the upcoming Rail Baltica connection ensures multimodal transport accessibility.

Thanks to these advantages, the Kaunas FEZ has become a major hub for high value-added manufacturing, logistics, and MRO investments, generating thousands of jobs and significantly contributing to the economic growth of the entire region.
