Convenient and efficient traveling in the city

We offer convenient and seamless mobility around the city, along with various opportunities to explore both Kaunas and its surrounding areas.

Getting to Kaunas

Kaunas is easily accessible from Riga, Warsaw, Vilnius, Klaipėda, and other nearby cities. In the city centre and Old Town, paid parking is in effect every day from 8 AM to 8 PM.

Due to the ongoing renovation of the Town Hall Square, parking rules have been updated. On weekdays from 8 AM to 6 PM, parking costs just €1/hour. Free parking applies in the Town Hall Square during evenings, nights, and all weekends.

Kaunas Bus Station is one of the most modern in the region. Not only does it look great in photos, but it also operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and offers plenty of entertainment for those waiting for intercity and international buses. Jazz concerts and movie screenings are held here from time to time – you’re in luck if you happen to catch one! Intercity and international bus routes are served by Kautra, Eurolines, Ecolines, Flixbus, Toks, and Lux Express. Check the timetables and buy tickets online. The bus station is located near the city centre. It takes only 15 minutes to walk to St. Michael the Archangel (Garrison) Church (also known as Soboras), one of Kaunas’ landmarks. Bus schedules and tickets

Kaunas is easily accessible by train from Vilnius and other Lithuanian and foreign cities, including Warsaw and Kraków. The Rail Baltica project, currently under construction, will further improve connections by linking Kaunas, Riga, Tallinn, and Warsaw. Laisvės Alėja (“Liberty Avenue”), Kaunas’ main street, is just a 15-minute walk from the train station. Train schedules and tickets

You can fly directly to Kaunas International Airport (KUN) from more than 20 different European airports. Getting to the city is very convenient, with the 29G city bus running regularly (its schedule is coordinated with flight times). Taxis are also available. INTERESTING! Attention private aircraft owners and pilots! There is a historic aerodrome not far from the centre of Kaunas. The S. Darius and S. Girėnas Aerodrome, which is over 100 years old, has undergone significant positive changes; in addition, small planes can land at the aerodrome.

Getting Around

If you decide to use public transport, we recommend downloading the Trafi app, where you can see live traffic and schedules, and the Žiogas app, where you can purchase (cheaper) tickets. The latter works extremely quickly and conveniently! It is also useful to use the public transport network website stops.lt, where you will find all public transport routes.

From 1 August, a new payment method has been introduced in Kaunas public transport – passengers can now pay with contactless bank cards and smart devices with NFC.

How does it work?
When boarding a public transport vehicle – a bus or trolleybus – simply tap your MasterCard or Visa contactless card, or any smart device linked to it (phone, watch, ring, etc.) on the validator. A ticket purchased with a contactless payment method costs 1 EUR and is valid for one passenger until the end of the route (the final stop). Discounts do not apply to this type of ticket, it does not allow transfers within 30 minutes, and only one ticket can be purchased with one card.

The Kaunas Public Transport Service Centre is located at Laisvės al. 114, Kaunas (opposite the E. Ožeškienės g. stop).
Working hours: Mon–Fri 7:30–18:30 (no lunch break; on the eve of public holidays – open one hour shorter).

Uber is not very popular in Kaunas, but there is a similar service, Bolt (formerly “Taxify”). Below is a discount code for first-time users of this service – KAUNASIN. Enter it when registering in the app and save 7 EUR!

The eTaksi app, which connects most of the city’s traditional taxi companies, may also be useful. eTaksi is a Vilnius-based company that has recently started operating in Kaunas. You can also ask your hotel staff to call a taxi for you by phone.

The CityBee or Bolt car-sharing apps offer a wide selection of new and nearly new cars, which you can pick up and drop off in many locations across the city. You can also take an electric car from Spark in Vilnius and return/charge it in Kaunas.

In August 2019, Bolt launched a scooter sharing service in central Kaunas. Oh, how fun it is! Just download the app or use the same one you use to call a taxi or order food.

In recent years, Kaunas has been working hard to improve cycling conditions, so you will be pleasantly surprised by the number of people riding bikes on the streets. You can rent a bike or bring your own (travelling to more remote places or up hills is no problem, as you can take your bike on public transport for free – look for the “Like Bike” sticker on the doors). For short trips, the CityBee app is useful, which also offers car rental.

In the central part of Kaunas and the Old Town, parking fees apply every day from 8:00 to 20:00. Due to the ongoing reconstruction of the Town Hall Square, it is temporarily not possible to park cars in the square.

You can pay for parking using the Unipark app, via SMS, with a contactless bank card, or with euro coins.

Since 2019, shipping has not been used for transportation. However, considering the fact that Kaunas is surrounded by the two largest rivers in Lithuania, water transportation would be a great solution. In any case, you can take a boat trip on the Kaunas Lagoon and visit the resort towns of Kačerginė, Kulautuva, and Zapyškis in the Kaunas district, or Raudondvaris, which are definitely worth a half-day or day trip. Boats also sail to Birštonas, a picturesque spa resort located about 40 km from Kaunas. For more information, schedules, and reservations, please contact Nemuno turas.
